Reading Like a Writer
22 October 2026 | 7:00–8:00 pm IST | Online | Free
Reading for enjoyment allows us to enter the world of a story. Reading like a writer asks us to pause and examine how the story was written.
In this one-hour workshop, we will look closely at short extracts from published fiction and study the choices behind the writing. We will explore how authors select details, use language, reveal information and shape the reader’s response.
The session will help you move beyond deciding whether you liked a piece of writing. You will learn how to identify techniques that work, understand why they work and consider how those techniques could inform your own writing.
During the workshop, we will explore:
- What it means to read like a writer
- How to notice deliberate choices in a piece of writing
- How authors use language and specific details to create an effect
- How the information a writer reveals or withholds influences the reader
- How to connect an author’s choices with your experience as a reader
- How to learn from another writer’s technique while retaining your own voice
- A practical method for analysing anything you read
